As a person against capital punishment, I feel more thought should

be placed on a matter that involves taking someone's life. In my mind and

the mind of many others the death penalty will always remain defined as “

“disciplinary” execution.

The death penalty is hypocritical; it condemns killing by killing people.

What we need, it seems to me (and I am a nobody) it to get the world’s governments to accept the current teaching of the Church on the death penalty. If we could do that, then the death penalty would be practically non-existent. I believe it will be more difficult – not less – to get secular governments to accept a blanket “never.”

The opinions brought upon us stating that the death penalty is a

very strong deterrent against crime holds allot of water. It is a proven

statistical fact that states that have reinstated and now enforce the death

penalty show no difference in their crime and murder rate. In some cases,

states that do impose the death penalty have a higher crime rate than the

states that do not impose this “disciplinary” action.

This is today’s ultramontanism: people will tie themselves in knots to rationalize error and anything Francis says, no matter how obviously it contradicts infallible teaching. You give Mark Shea too much credit. I wouldn’t take anything he says these days seriously, as he seems to have become or finally revealed himself as a progressive political hack than any catholic apologist. I am suspicious this has little to do with the death penalty, however, but the claim of development is a test for future use with contraception, women’s ordination, giving communion to non-catholics.

Christian and Secular Arguments Against Capital Punishment, ..

The Doctors who wrote on this subject after the patristic period not only consistently reaffirm the legitimacy in principle of capital punishment, but also consistently affirm that it is legitimate in principle , to resort to the practice. One finds this view taken by St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Peter Canisius, St. Robert Bellarmine, and St. Alphonsus Liguori. They also consistently ground this judgment in scripture.

Most Americans support the death penalty. They also …

“Moreover, if the Fathers and Doctors of the Church, all previous popes, and even scripture itself in fact have (as Brugger’s view implies) been so wrong for so long about something as serious as capital punishment, why should Brugger or anyone else trust what these sources have to say about contraception, conscience, grace, marriage, and the like? How can the credibility of the Church be upheld on any doctrinal matter?”

Capital punishment; the death penalty: all points of view

Now, as Joe Bessette and I show in our book, the Doctors of the Church who happen also to be Fathers of the Church and who comment on the subject of capital punishment all agree that the practice is legitimate at least in (even if some of them urge against its use in ). In particular, this is true of St. Ephraem, St. Hilary, St. Gregory of Nazianzus, St. Ambrose, St. Jerome, St. John Chrysostom, and St. Augustine. As I noted in the reply to Hart linked to above, Ambrose and Augustine link this judgment to their understanding of Romans 13.
