The plates are made of rock and are from 50 to 250 miles (80 to 400 km) thick.



At the boundaries of the plates, various deformations occur as the plates interact; they separate from one another (seafloor spreading), collide (forming mountain ranges), slip past one another (subduction zones, in which plates undergo destruction and remelting), and slip laterally.

The theory of plate tectonics (meaning "plate structure") was developed in the 1960's.
Mid-plate earthquakes -- those occurring in the interiors of plates -- aremuch less frequent than those along plate boundaries and more difficultto explain. Earthquakes along the Atlantic seaboard of the United Statesare most likely related in some way to the westward movement of the NorthAmerican Plate away from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a continuing process begunwith the break-up of Pangaea. However, the causes of these infrequent earthquakesare still not understood.

Most earthquakes and volcanic eruptions do not strike randomly but occurin specific areas, such as along plate boundaries. One such area is thecircum-Pacific where the Pacific Plate meets many surroundingplates. The Ring of Fire is the most seismically and volcanically activezone in the world.
